The best show you aren’t watching

// September 19th, 2007 // fun

Friday Night LightsJina and I have done a lot of publicity for Friday Night Lights. We’ve told a ton of friends about it, but we really haven’t converted anyone. No one will give it a chance. Why not? Because they saw the movie, they think the show is just about football and have no idea of the stories, the acting and the greatness behind it. They don’t know about the amazing family portrayed by the coach and his wife. They don’t know the timidity of Matt Saracen. They don’t know about the kid put in a wheel chair and his battle to get back. They don’t know about the hilarious Landry.

And I’m not blowing smoke. This show had to be in the Top 5 last year, certainly better than 24, Prison Break, Earl, CSI (although the finale was spellbinding), Boston Legal (just for Tyler), etc., etc., etc…

Since if you wont take our words for it, take it from my sports-writing idol Bill Simmons’ who wrote today to ‘Please, help me keep the ‘Lights’ on‘.

The series has been moved to a doomed spot on Friday night. It’s in danger of being canceled and it would be a travesty. If you love good TV, you are missing out.

You can watch them all for free on NBC.com.

It is so much more than football! The acting and writing are stellar. If you trust us on other show recommendations, then trust us here. Start with Season 1 DVD. If the first episode doesn’t get you hooked, then Mike will write an entire post solely about you.

  2. Mike says:

Yes, solely about you and whatever topic you want me to talk about!

The episodes are free too on NBC.com.

Here’s the reason we’re not watching FNL.

    1. It doesn’t look exciting -we saw the movie and for most people that was enough.

    2. It looks like every other teeny bopper show full of ’serious’ teen issues – We’re not teenagers anymore. It’s hard to care about they’re so-called problems.

    3. Most importantly; there is a finite number of hours of TV most of will watch in a week -frankly I watch more TV than I should at this point and if I’m going to make room in the DVR, it’s going to be for something different. Every season there’s 1 or 2 that make the rotation.

So sorry FNL, if your fate wasn’t sealed before, moving to Fri nite should about wrap it up.

  4. Mike says:

Wow, brutal Scott, just brutal :)

1 and 2 are crazy though, but that’s cool. I already said it’s nothing like the movie at all.

And it’s nothing like a teeny bopper show.

But I do agree with finite hours of TV during the week.

    Don’t you love TV debates!?!

  5. Mike says:

By the way, if Bill Simmons likes it, it must be exciting and NOT a teeny bopper show :)

  6. Scott says:

I knew I’d get a reaction off this post ;-)

The thing is I’m sure it’s not a teen bopper show, but that’s how it can look at first glance.

My brother loves the show, so that says something…I’m not sure what exactly. :-)

Bottom line is I just can’t do the catch up thing on this one, but I hope it makes it because everyone who I’ve talked to that likes…really likes it.

  7. Adrian says:

I’m with Scott on the catch up thing… I trust that it’s not like the movie or some teeny bopper show and that it’s probably really good. But I gotta pick and choose which shows to watch. We JUST caught up to Heroes and we should have been watching that all along. Just can’t watch ‘em all.
