The Emmy’s are lame

// September 17th, 2007 // fun

Tina FeyJina and I both agreed last night. It’s probably way beyond time we stop watching these nutty award shows. How horrible have they gotten? Even though it was the Emmy’s last night, which you’d think would at least be a quality award show, it’s just like all the others. The Oscar’s are the only ones that really seem to be on the ball every year. For the most part.

But last night was a travesty. And it goes to show that all that really matters is how much YOU like a show. Because whoever forms these nominations obviously doesn’t want to give credit where credit is due.

In a category that supposedly was going to see Ugly Betty win over 30 Rock, The Office and Entourage, at least 30 Rock won (cause I love Tina Fey). But honestly? How is the Office not the best among those? How could Ugly Betty even have a chance?

And poor Jenna Fischer from the Office loses to Jaime Pressly from My Name is Earl? Ugh. Fischer had an amazing year with the way Pam changed over the course of it. It’s too bad she wasn’t recognized for it.

Steve Carrell has now been snubbed two years in a row, where the lead actor in a comedy series has gone to Tony Shalhoub and this year, Ricky Gervase.

But in the drama category…Boston Legal makes it in over Lost and Battlestar Galactica? BSG has some of the best writing and acting on TV and they never get noticed. But William Shatner and James Spader? Even Fright Night Lights had to be better than Boston Legal. I don’t even know anyone who watches that show.

Heck, Lost is better than Heroes even, which got nominated.

The insanity! :)

At least there was SOME justice. Terry O’Quinn won for his role as John Locke on Lost. Awesome for him. Friday Night Lights got an Emmy for outstanding direction, which is totally warranted.

And Greg Daniels did win for his writing on the Office. And yes, as much as I love the Office, 30 Rock winning best comedy was pretty sweet.

But overall, you really feel that award shows are less about quality and more about emotions. Who is hot right now? Who would it be cool to give an award to? Of course the Sopranos are going to win a bunch, it’s their last year. But were they really the best drama last year?

Jeremy Piven is good on Entourage, but he really didn’t have that great of a year compared to Rainn Wilson from the Office.

Oh well. As you can see, I get too into this stuff. But it’s a waste of time and I think it’s time to stop watching these things.

Oh, and not to mention Ryan Seacrest hosting…ugh…really?

Okay, enough…I’m done.

Can’t comment. Didn’t watch the show. Stopped watching awards shows long ago.

  2. Mike says:

See, you have the right idea.

  3. Tyler says:

    I watch Boston Legal.

  4. Mike says:

    I love you Tyler :)

  5. The round stage was silly, it was the Sopranos show…and NOWAY did battlestar not win for best written show…… silly Emmy’s….

I used to love the Emmmy’s right up there with the Oscars, but the last few have just gotten worse and worse.

Seriously Boston…yawn…legal? That show was never great (sorry Tyler) and certainly jumped the shark long ago. Same with the Sopranos…enough already.

Finally, if I needed other reasons not to watch…two words…Ryan Seacrest! Someone please make him go away or at least limit his TV appearances to American Idol.

  7. Mike says:

Seriously…if you host the Emmy’s and need to make three jokes that relate to your job on American Idol, then you shouldn’t be hosting.

I loved when he went over to Teri Hatcher though, that so funny with all the rumors about them. And you don’t even think Ugly Betty should be have a chance?? Whatever! It wins awards and has high ratings for a reason. I mean, it’s no surprise you wouldn’t like it since it’s geared towards women and about a fashion magazine, but then again you do like Jane Austen movies! :)

  9. Mike says:

The Teri Hatcher thing was absolutely the best part of his act :) Hilarious…

And yeah, when you see The Office in the same category, I don’t think it deserves a chance :)

Honestly…I watched 3 episodes and I thought it seemed goofy and cheesy, nothing special. The little brother who was very GAY just annoyed me :)

Anyways, I know it’s probably good and all…it just feels to me that the awards it wins are more because of the premise of the show and America Fererra, than the actual writing and show itself. The writing and direction on the Office is so clever, so original…it blows most other comedies away.

Just my thoughts :) I love ya Nicky!

I usually can’t stand awards shows anyways because it’s all a big act (Al Gore’s ‘award’ for Current TV was just a promotional gimmick). But recording with Tivo and delaying when you start watching it makes it a lot easier. I don’t know I would have survived the MTV VMAs without it.

Agree to disagree…although I do agree that The Office is better. It is by far my favorite comedy too!

  12. Funniest Office moment ever???

There was talk around the office about prominent, import people which then morphed into important white people vs black people. Steve Carrel said “I love black people,,in fact for every white person you name i can name a more important black person…

one name came out “John Lennon”.. “Please” said Carrell, “Martin Luther King”

Someone yelled out “Regan”…. “Uh.. Colin powell” Carrel retorted..

    Last name came out… “Jesus”…. Carell responded “….Apollo Creed….”

  13. Mike says:

    That was a great episode.

  14. I definitely have to agree that the awards shows, and maybe the Emmys in particular, are really starting to show how irrelevant they are becoming. The Oscars have always been bought and sold to some extent but some of the shows that when awards at the Emmys (and continue to win year after year against better shows that never even get nominated) are just laughable. Sad really.
