The sapling

One of my great ambitions from my 101 things to do list is to learn to do Bonsai. I think there is something fascinating about these little trees that can look like miniature versions of the real thing.

With this in mind, when we visited the Redwoods in California a few weeks ago, I purchased a little sapling of a Sequoia tree. I had heard they make decent Bonsai trees, so why not give it a shot? Either that, or I Sequoiacould plant it in my backyard and annoy the people who live here 50-100 years from now.

The way to start a small tree and turn it into a Bonsai project is to keep it confined to a smallish pot so the roots don’t go wild and crazy. So I planted it last week finally. Since I figured some of you would get a kick out of how small it is, I figured I’d post this blog with a picture of it :)

Click on the picture to see it full-sized. He’s so tiny!

  1. I’ve never tried bonsai, but I’ve always enjoyed them – especially the ones that are very old and have been pruned artistically to be a miniature of a weathered tree that has stood up to the elements for hundreds of years.

Lillie, I totally agree with you. There are some trees that people have used for Bonsai that are 10-15 years old and look pretty amazing on such a small scale. I’d love to do something like that someday.

Also, once I finish On the Road, I plan on starting to read your manuscript :)
