I had a few random thoughts to get off my chest before tonight’s second Lost episode of Season 4, plus I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Lost Day!
The first tiny thought I had was about Desmond and Penny. Obviously the show has a lot to focus on with Ben, the Others, the new Others and the survivors. There are many stories going on right now, but I feel that somehow they’ve missed the Penny issue with Desmond.
Maybe they’ll get to it later, but shouldn’t Desmond have freaked out a bit, or at least mentioned to someone that he saw Penny’s face on a monitor down in the Looking Glass?
At this point in time seeing her there should be plaguing his mind. It should be all-consuming I would think. We really have no idea what story he told everyone about how Charlie died and wrote a note on his hand. Did Desmond mention Penny on the TV screen?
Is this just an issue they don’t have time to deal with? I guess I just think that after being there 91 days, hearing from Naomi that Penny is looking for him, seeing her face on a monitor and then finding out it’s NOT Penny’s boat…that he’d be more concerned over it.
And another question is this: How do these new people know about Penny? How are they related?
The Man in the Coffin
Okay, Jina really came up with this theory, so I give her all the credit, but now I’m running with it.
The newspaper clipping Jack found with a certain man’s death really struck him. Enough so that he went to the funeral even though no one else did. We have no clue who was in the coffin, but we do know that Kate had no reason to go.
This is supposedly what the clipping said:
“The body of J___ (some think John) Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.
Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim’s loft.
Concerned for tenants’ safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.
According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son.
Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.”
We don’t know who J. or John Lantham is…it could be some fake name or alias.
But the interesting thing is this. Unless it was one of our survivors under a new name, the person who died doesn’t appear to be anyone famous…like the Oceanic 6. He seems to have money in order to live in a loft in New York, but not famous.
I think many people are speculating that it’s someone we know already, someone like Sawyer, Locke, Ben, whoever.
But the clipping mentions nothing about the Oceanic 6, and thus it sort of makes you wonder if it’s anyone we already know.
The theory we have is that this guy who dies is really one of these so-called rescuers who take the Ocean 6 off the island and back home eventually. Think about it:
- He’s not famous, he’s likely not someone who crashed in Ocean flight 815
- His death isn’t a big deal to anyone and we don’t know his name
- Once Jack sees the news that he’s dead…he wants to go back
So our theory is basically that this guy is the one who takes them off the island and who forces them to lie about everything once they get back to the mainland.
Now that he’s gone…Jack’s anguish and guilt rush to the surface even more and he realizes that the person stopping them from returning is now gone.
Any thoughts on this? I guess if the guy who landed in the parachute introduces himself as John tonight, we might be getting somewhere.

Regarding Penny and Desmond, I really don’t think Desmond saw Penny on the screen. Desmond didn’t reach the room until Charlie already closed it, and I saw no indication that Desmond then looked at the tv screen. I think he was focused on Charlie.
I thought that Desmond (when running to Charlie) was screaming … in slow motion, of course… P - E - N - N - Y!
But I could be wrong on that.
I’m with Adrian on the Penny and Desmond thing. I’m not sure if he saw her. Although, I think he would be wondering how Charlie knew it wasn’t Penny’s boat.
I like the other theory. It makes a lot of sense. Good work team!

After giving it some thought, I think is that it is Micheal in the coffin. He and Walt got off the island but weren’t part of the six. He assumed the alias of J__ Lantham in order to hide. Jack and Kate and perhaps others of the 6 knew of his escape. Perhaps that was what Abaddon (aka Smokey) was asking Hurley about when he said, “Are they still alive?”, referring to Micheal and Walt. Maybe Micheal helped the 6 escape in order to sooth his guilt over killing the 2 women and turning the 3 over to the Others.

I don’t think Desmond saw Penny on the screen - he never entered the room with Charlie.
Also - J = Jacob…?
Gotta think Michael, because it did say that Lantham had a teenage son. That doesn’t fit any other character on the show except Michael. Foreshadowing to his return in the finale last season?
If Kate was still upset about Michael’s betrayal, that would explain her reaction when Jack asked her why she didn’t go. Of course, the question arises then that if nobody came to his funeral, where is this teenage son? Wouldn’t he be there at least?
Well - they (Michael and Walt) did not have the best father/son relationship, so that would not be too surprising if his own son did not show up.
Guys…Desmond was running towards Charlie for a reason…and he mouthed the words “Pennnnyyy”….
That’s the only explanation for it. He couldn’t have seen the guy at the window yet, I don’t think he saw him until the door was closed.
I think he heard Penny’s voice and was running. At least, now I’m only 95% sure
I guess when we find out WHERE we see Michael this season, we’ll possibly know more…
Mike, you’re right. I remember that now.
WOW - that was another terrific episode!
Recap up
as desmond is running towards Charlie (because one eye slips into the water), Desmond sees Penny on the screen just as Charlie is closing the door and Des actually yells her name. TiVo people, TiVo. I just watched the scene.
now, for the coffin…got to go with Michael as he is the only one we know of having a child. As far as why Walt wouldn’t come to the funeral…maybe Walt killed him. We all know there’s something special about him that he doesnt have to touch anything, did u see the bird “missing scenes”? Or, Walt’s back on the island - with Locke. Dun dun dun (that’s my dramatic sound effect-not bad for a girl).
TOTALLY AGREE…GREEN ARROW WAS BACK!!!!… oh wait.. other cool show hehe =) my bad…
Haven’t finished it yet Cap’n, but it was funny after we complained about it last week, he returns
