Lyla is a month old

// December 21st, 2008 // family

Tired I’m writing this the evening of December 21st, but by tomorrow night at 11:29pm, Lyla Grace will be a month old.

She’s got a steady boyfriend, moved out of the house, is graduating from college in two years and already wrecked my Toyota.

Wow, where has the time gone?

Okay, I’m making that all up OF COURSE, but it’s crazy that it’s been a month already. Actually, in a weird way, it feels like it’s been longer. Mostly because everything has been such a blur, including the birth, that it all seems like it happened ages ago.

So what happened this past week in the life of Lyla? Well, she twice was in the hands of our friends…once for the Suns game last Monday, and the second time just this past Saturday when we needed to do a bit of Christmas shopping. Thanks to Scott and Deb for that, and especially Scott who had to deal with an incredibly messy diaper change.

Lyla has been a good little baby lately. She really doesn’t scream or cry a ton anymore, unless it’s for the obvious reasons, like a bath, dirty diaper or she’s hungry. The whole idea of her having colic during that second week seems to be a thing of the past.

Of course, we could just be a lot better at knowing what is going on, hence the reason things are a little easier these days.

Jina did call me once this week asking when I was coming home…she was very tired, Lyla was just awake and being kind of fussy and wiggly, which meant Jina didn’t get a whole lot of sleep. And the night before, I had to work late, Jina caught us.... which resulted in no evening nap like usual for her.

What we try to do during the week is get Jina to bed around 7pm or so, and I stay up until 10-11pm with Lyla, thus letting Jina get a solid 2-4 hours of sleep. Then she just does her best the rest of the night.

Lyla and I have also bonded a bit this week in terms of sleeping. I’ve learned a good way to have her laying on her tummy on top of me, wedged between me and the couch, which really seems to knock her out. We’ve had a couple of good naps this week (see right).

The only real problem we have is Lyla not sleeping a ton by herself. We lay her in this bouncy chair, which works sometimes, but not always. She sleeps a lot better when it’s with one of us, making things difficult sometimes, mostly for Jina. If she could only get Lyla to sleep in her bassinet or bouncy chair for an hour or two on her own, then doing things like taking naps, checking email, etc., would be a ton easier.

It could also be that she prefers the “tummy” time kind of sleeping, instead of being on her back, but who knows yet.

And finally, to end the week, my dad arrived in town for Christmas and came over on Saturday and Sunday to see Lyla, his first granddaughter.

She seemed to like him as a few of the picutres turned out pretty amazing. It was almost as if she was aware that there was a camera taking shots of her.

Wow, great picture of Gramps and Lyla! Wide awake!

Lyla finally realizes there is someone taking tons of pictures of her...

That about sums up the week. This coming week will be a lot more eventful, as we travel to my dad’s side of the family for Christmas Eve, and then to my mom’s on Christmas Day. Lots of family haven’t met her yet, including Lyla’s two great-grandmas.

You can see all of Week 4’s photos right over here.

I'm not sure if I've ever really gotten 4 hours of sleep… but that's a nice idea. :)

She really is a great baby. So we are adapting quickly.

Hang in there guys and know we're always available to give you a break. And keep trying to get Lyla to sleep by herself, she'll get there.

  5. That's why I said 2-4 hours :)

Enjoy these moments. I love the sleeping photos of you and Lyla so sweet. It is hard to get them to sleep on their own. They love the warmth of your body and your smells. Bailey did not take to her bassinet very well either, she actually liked her crib better and did rather well in there. I can't recall though how old she was when we started the crib. I am glad she has been doing better for you. Those first couple of weeks are so new and no sleep does not help. I better get myself ready for that again!!!! Merry Christmas!
