Dark Knight for Best Picture?

// January 8th, 2009 // fun

When I first saw The Dark Knight last year, I said two things when I left the theater: Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor and just MAYBE the movie itself for Best Picture. I’m talking Oscars of course.

No comic book movie has ever won Best Picture, and I’m not even sure how many have been nominated. But it just seemed that if it was ever to happen, this movie would do it.

It would certainly make the Oscars a lot more fun to watch with Ledger and The Dark Knight up for awards. I’d be pulling for them big time.

Well, suddenly the idea of a Best Picture award isn’t too far-fetched. Here’s the scoop from IMDB:

The Dark Knight, the most successful movie at the box office in 2008, may have been passed over by virtually all the critics groups for best film, but it did receive recognition from a group that really counts — the Producers Guild of America. The PGA announced that Knight was one of five films nominated for its top award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures, due to be presented on Jan. 24. The others are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, and Slumdog Millionaire. The Guild’s nominees often mirror those chosen by Oscar voters, and the winner usually takes the best-film Oscar.

That is interesting. We’ll see how things play out, but I’m hopeful now.
