My new hobby
// January 5th, 2009 // family
My weather addiction has taken a new turn. No, I’m not going to do the Tornado Videos Tour that I’ve been talking about recently (at least, not this year), but I did buy a little something that will take my weather hobby to the next level.
For awhile I’ve had a little tiny home weather station, which is basically just a remote temperature gauge that shows the temp outside as well as the one inside. Boring, but it was cool. I also had a manual rain gauge outside where I track the rainfall all year by logging the amount of precipitation we get anytime it rains.
Enough of these archaic and ancient tools! Time to move into the modern age! I present to you, the La Crosse Technology WS-2315AL Wireless Weather Station.
It was a gift from Jina, who told me at Christmas that one of my presents was to go out and find a cool weather station for myself. Thank you babe!
You can see from the picture to the right that this thing is pretty fancy. But it IS the cheapest of its kind out there, which is a good starting point for me.
Basically you get four pieces: A wind speed sensor, a rain gauge, a temperature/humidity/dew point sensor and then an indoor display.
Actually, there is a fifth piece: It can all be connected to your computer for logging. Which means you can PUBLISH it on a website as well, even professional weather sites out there like Wunderground.com.
I’ll be able to provide weather data online for those who choose to view it. And for myself to see when I’m not at home. There are actually two other guys with weather stations within a mile of my house.
I’ve always been annoyed when I’m out of town and have no idea how much it’s rained…well, now I can see it from anywhere!
The station comes today, Monday, and I cannot wait to set it up. Of course, the setup process isn’t going to be easy. I need to install the three remote sensors in good spots on the roof, meaning some work will be going into that.
Stay tuned for more updates! I know you are all excited to hear more about it!

Wow! You have such an awesome wife!!! This is like the best present for you Mike! Have fun!!!
She is pretty awesome
Of course you live in the desert, so figuring out how much it rains while you're out of town is fairly easy….none. Seriously, this is a cool gift, esp for a weather junkie. Enjoy!
NO kidding…but we did get over 9 inches at my house this year, and Phoenix as a city got the same amount…so it was a good year.
You will be in weather heaven! Looks like a cool gift!
Cool… I have one of the indoor/outdoor thermometer things and really would like to interface it to my PC. Maybe this is what I need–along with this software http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Open2300/Web…
Yeah, there are other free softwares out there to use…I'm going with something called WUHU since my desktop will be running XP. But anything will work.
I had the temp thing outside forever…time to upgrade
Nifty! So when are you going to start posting podcasts to go along with it, with you standing in front of a map, giving your weather report?
Yes, wearing my Thundercats t-shirt!
lol!
