Jina and Sports
// February 24th, 2009 // family
My ongoing, mushy tribute to Jina continues today with the the topic of sports.
I find myself incredibly lucky…unbelievably lucky, to have landed a girl who really enjoys sports. At first I thought a lot of it was her trying to “like” sports because she knew I did. And that is definitely part of it. But she loves football and basketball apart from me and it’s one of those things I love about her.
I think it all started on our honeymoon to Puerta Vallarta when it was so frakking hot (90 degrees, 90% humidity) that we never went outside except to eat at Planet Hollywood or The Hard Rock Cafe.
What did we end up doing most of the time? Watching WIMBLEDON.
Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras were playing and we got consumed with tennis. And it was a blast. We still talk about it to this day, especially when Wimbledon starts up every year. It’s almost a tradition for us to watch a little of it to celebrate our anniversary.
Now I do owe a bit of thanks to Jina’s parents, especially her mom who worked for the Arizona Cardinals for so many years. I know she loved football before that, but I think having her mom so connected every week with the ups and downs of an NFL franchise really made it part of Jina’s life.
Jina loves the Suns almost as much as I do. She loves going with me to games whenever we get a chance. Whenever a game is on TV, she tries so hard to maneauver items on our DVR so we can watch. In fact, during the NBA Playoffs every year, I tend to find myself wandering around the house looking for something to do, while she’s glued to the TV watching every single game.
That’s hot.
And for the last few years now, Sundays have become our day together to watch football. We get NFL ticket, we make breakfast, we put in my fantasy players and we watch football all day long (insert a nap as well).
Heck, she even knows most of the players on my fantasy football teams, or at least tries very hard to remember who they are.
The bottom line is that I love that it’s something we can share together. I think that’s a key to a happy marriage: Try to appreciate and love what the other person enjoys.
Jina is very good at doing that and much better than me. Although my fondness for chick flicks should score me a lot of points, right Jina?
Sports is just sports…it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things. But it’s the fact that we can enjoy it and experience it together that makes it something so very special to me.

I also love seeing Nicky enjoy sports as well. Sometimes she’ll get more heated up than I am over refs calls and I have to calm her down saying ‘No babe, we really did foul them’.
Yeah…Jina has even gotten on me a bit this year because I’ve been down on the Suns and haven’t wanted to watch all the games
Wow… I am going to get spoiled reading all these things that make me so awesome! By the end of the week, no one is going to be able to live with me!
No one or just me?
Who knows… Charlie gets worked up when I get a big head.
“…Watching WIMBLEDON…” BOOYA!!!!! Thats the Capn’s sport!!! I know Jina loves football its totally amaizng… my favorite part was when she pulled out this 4 min soapbox on its her “..favorite day to spend with her husband…. Sundays, the subs, the games, time and chatting her husband, she totally looks forward to it…..”!!!
