Watchmen review and warning
// March 9th, 2009 // fun
Ohhhhh, a WARNING! Yes, read it a bit later in this post.
My cousin Mar…erm, Cap’n Schwartz and Shawn joined me on Saturday to check out Watchmen up at the Cine Capri at the Scottsdale 101 theaters.
I’d been waiting for the movie for awhile now. Heck, I went to San Diego Comic Con early last year and got a Watchmen t-shirt with the release date already printed on the back.
Yes, I wore it to the movie, go ahead and make fun.
So was it good? Yes. I thought it was fantastic. Now, will everyone? I dunno…there are things in it that some traditional movie goers will groan over more than likely.
First off, it was 2.5 hours long, which is an eternity for some. Second, the first half of the movie has a lot of backstory that helps you understand just who these heroes are. Remember, this isn’t Batman or Superman…most of the people out there haven’t heard of Watchmen nor know much about them if they have.
It’s also violent and gory…I covered my eyes a few time because I knew what was coming.
The story was great and epic, I loved the characters and how they developed them. It was so much like the graphic novel that I felt as if I was watching the live version (which I was, I know, but rarely do you see a story from a book look exactly how you pictured it).
Mike’s Rating: 4 out of 5
Now the warning:
This is NOT a movie for kids. My friend from work this morning took his two kids to see it (they are in their low teens) and regretted not checking it out first.
Besides a lot of violence, intensely gory scenes and swearing, there is nudity and a fairly graphic sex scene. The blue guy you see in the previews, Dr. Manhattan, is nude most of the movie and pretty much on display for all to see.
Not to judge anyone who take their kids to see this, because can you really blame people who see that it’s a “comic book movie” and not think about what the content might be? But it’s somewhat amazing how little some parents try to find out about a film before taking their kids to see it.
I mean, it’s Rated R…and while a lot of R films don’t have a ton of bad stuff…it would be enough to make me check to see exactly what is so bad that gave it an R rating.
Anyways, I wanted to pass that on.

My oldest wanted to see that and I laughed. I told her “uhhh…it’s rated R, sweetheart. No way.”
I think alot of people are going to be freaked out over this movie simply for the reason you mentioned….nobody outside of comic geeks (me included) knows who The Watchmen are.
I have to agree… your friend at work, didn’t recognize the R rating, and that was his downfall. Could have made a ton more money this weekend if it was PG-13 and cleaned up a tad, but then it wouldnt be true to the book.
Movie was spectacular, really well done, its a great story. Was a great time, thanks Shawn and Mike for letting me tag along!
FYI, Capri had a great slew of previews ahead fo the movie.
He actually KNEW it was R-Rated, but figured it was a comic book, so it would probably be like other R-rated movies: violence and the f-word.
Little did he know he was getting sex and Dr. Manhattan’s “twigs and berries” as I saw tweeted this weekend, lol
