Let’s talk about Lost!
// April 2nd, 2009 // fun
The tons of emails and phone calls from my devoted readers hasn’t fallen on deaf ears. I was going to give it up, but enough of you are upset and essentially “lost” without my weekly recaps, so I’m back. Enough with the hate mail and nasty Tweets!
(Okay, I made all that up. ONE person is bummed about me not writing recaps, and since all I require is an audience of one, I’ve returned. Thank you to that one person.)
***SPOILERS!***
Back.To.The.Future.
The best part of the entire episode was the conversation between Hurley and Miles. Looking for his fingers to start going transparent was priceless.
But the truly great part was the writers throwing in that gem of a “time travel” discussion just for our benefit. They told people over the summer that time cannot be changed, but it’s not like everyone pays attention to articles on the internet entertainment sites. They knew people were confused and wondering what was going on, so they ‘splained it.
At least…until Hurley threw down the gauntlet with Ben not remembering Sayid.
I think the big key is…or DID HE? We don’t know…but it makes sense right?
Dang it! I just wrote out this awesome theory about why he actually DID recognize Sayid, but then my silly brain remembered what Richard Alpert said at the end and so DUH, that’s why he has no recollection.
And what was Alpert referring to? What is going on in that Temple?
By the way, I’m fairly certain that is not just some temple, but a dwelling place for The Others. It might be like some underground city actually.
(how many of you were expecting the cabin when Alpert was carrying Ben? I certainly was…)
Okay, Kate has been boring lately and there is a fair amount of people who completely dislike her. But I found this episode very, very good, and her backstory about how she ended up on the plane compelling. Cassidy becoming her “shrink” in a way and pointing out the obvious at every step was the first REAL truth we’ve gotten about Kate’s hidden feelings about…Sawyer and Jack.
Makes more sense now why she took Aaron doesn’t it?
And what about Jack? The Dudley-Do-Right of the gang suddenly wont help an “innocent” boy who suffered a gunshot wound just because he hates Ben. I like it…even if it was a bit off until Juliet called him out at the end about why he’s truly there. Then it all made more sense to me.
So in 1977, we find out that Ellie and Charles are leading the others, even if Richard doesn’t answer to them. A lot of people think Penny is the daughter of Ellie and Charles, which would make Daniel Faraday her step-brother or something like that.
Where is Daniel anyways? Where did Sayid go?
I can’t end the recap without mentioning the final scene with Locke and Ben. That was pure awesome. Locke welcoming Ben back to the “land of the living” has so many double-meanings it’s not funny.
The weird thing is…Ben was so insistent on bringing Locke back, did he not expect to see him alive?
What did you all think of the episode? Did you pick up on anything I missed? I hope so!

When Richard said Ben would forever be an Other, I can only assume we’re supposed to believe that’s why he turned out to be a sociopath, and not because his father was a drunken idiot. Actually, they’re turning the father into a sympathetic character … and almost went a bit too far in doing that, even throwing Kate in there as a … I dunno, possible third love interest or something. It’s all getting a little creepy.
finally. Add me to the list of people who complained. I did it in my mind and never actually wrote or called you. But I DID think about it. You must keep the LOST posts coming. I need debriefing.
Matt, are you saying a year from now, we’ll know Kate as Ben’s Step-Mother??? EWWWWWWWW! ROTFL!
Melissa, glad I can help
thanks for reading!
I missed your recap Mike! I just didn’t write because I felt a little lame complaining!
Before I forget, that whole Kate cozying up with ben’s dad thing got me thinking about back when he had brunch with her in one of the first seasons. Remember how he let her shower and gave her a nice dress to wear? I wonder if this has anything to do with that?
I wish I could find a screen shot of the pit of dharma bodies. I wonder if we’d see any of the losties’ names on those bodies.
It was really interesting to me to see that jack is essentially to blame for Ben becomming who he is. If he had just helped, Ben never would have become an other.
I definitly can’t stand Jack or Kate any more.
The last scene with Ben and Locke WAS priceless. Should be interesting to see the next move with them!
Amy – pretty awesome pointing out the irony of Jack not saving Ben’s life is what actually led to the ‘Ben’ Jack ends up despising.
I think it’s pretty cool that I heard all these different theories on how Ben’s life will be saved by Jack and/or Juliet and instead gave us something different.
Yeah, nice note by Amy…Jack tries to do something to prevent Ben from living, but it backfires…of course.
I loved the time travel discussion because we had one just like it at work last week after last week’s episode. Just shows how smart the writers are in that regard.
Not so smart is the Jack and Kate stuff. They were the heroes of the show and now everyone hates them? Someone screwed up. I just don’t understand Kate’s motives even though they at least tried to explain them. I don’t have a problem with Jack but I don’t think they’re giving him much to do.
I loved how they proved what they were saying about not being able to change anything (in the future) by having Jack refuse to help Ben and THAT being the reason he ends up becoming an Other.
