Let’s talk about Lost!

Arrr….spoilers lie ahead mateys!
For those that love the mystical side of the Island…the temple, the smoke monster…Jacob…this was the episode for you.
Which is to say, it was a great episode to ME.
Let’s get to the big reveal from this week: Ben did indeed try to go kill Penny.
For everything that predicted that, kudos. Wasn’t really that big of a surprise, but they certainly teased us with the line of dialog from Ben late in the episode: “Sun, if you see Desmond, tell him I’m sorry.”
From that…I was actually fooled for a few minutes into thinking something bad happened to Penny. But no, instead, Desmond was the one who gave him a serious butt-whooping and their little boy staved off Ben’s assassination attempt.
Even if it was brief…how good was it to see Desmond and Penny again? It also begs the question…what is going to happen with them? Their story isn’t done…is it?
Okay, a few things…I’m kind of glad Caesar is dead…I sometimes get tired of new characters that don’t serve much purpose. Although…I thought he was going to be a bit more involved than that. Can you imagine getting blasted by a shotgun like that? Ouch…
Second…Ilana and the people who asked Frank: “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” What is in that big crate? Weapons? I think they FOUND weapons somewhere, but it has nothing to do with what’s inside that metal container.
I’d LOOVE for it to be Charles Widmore, but I doubt it. The shot of him talking to Ben on the phone makes me think he was a long distance away.
So what is in the shadow of the statue? I’m thinking the Temple, and here is why:
Ben sees this images towards the end of the episode when he’s about to face the smoke monster.
Jina and I paused it, looked at it and our two minds worked together to kind of come up with what we were seeing.
I thought the dog-like thing on the rigth was obviously the statue on the beach, while the squiggly thing on the left Jina astutely gathered was the smoke monster.
So did the Temple somehow lie in the shadow of the Statue in years past? Is that why it’s destroyed now? To hide the way??? Interesting…
Ben
This episode was the first Ben-centric one we’ve had in awhile, and it was great. But even better than that was the sudden change in John Locke. Somehow, from being killed and raised again from the dead, he knows things now about the Island that makes Ben look completely…lost.
I love how Locke knew that Ben was lying about why he wanted to be judged.
Also, does Ben ever tell the truth? He somehow got Caesar on his side with the story about Locke being on the Island already, only to kill Caesar later. It’s like he’s a pathological liar.
When he talks to Sun and says he’s scared of the fact that Locke is walking around alive…is he really? Was that the truth?
Either way, it was awesome to see how he summons the monster. But when he did that, where did Locke go?
They next travel to the Temple where Ben falls into a bit, sees that image I posted above, which appears to be above a room where the Smoke Monster comes from. I saw the tiny holes and at first thought it was where you would put a torch, but then I thought it looked like a vent. Sure enough, out pops Smokey.
And we’re treated to a look at the monster that we haven’t seen since…well, Mr. Eko. He was surrounded by the monster and then killed later. Although those memories are fuzzy to me. How soon was he killed after seeing those images in Smokey? Was he being judged like Ben was?
So Ben is somehow forgiven for what he does, but ghostly Alex shows up to warn him to obey and follow Locke or he will be destroyed. Yikes.
What did you guys think of the episode? Anything you saw that I didn’t?

The hieroglyphic is of Anubis, God of the Underworld. At this point I think it’s very clear he or one of the other Egyptian gods were the basis for the statue. Maybe Horus.
Caesar is dead, but I doubt he’s gone. I believe he will be back in some form. He was in first class, after all!
Yeah, I knew it was a Egyptian God…the layers this show has is so amazing.
First class, lol
Good recap, Mike. This was a terrific show! I was digging all the mythology and backstory of the Island that was being revealed to us. I wondered if Widmore was in the silver crate too. Wouldn’t that be wild? I think you’re right about Ben, but not so much that he’s a pathological liar, but that he’s always working the angles. He’s never straightforward about his intentions, and is always secretly looking out for #1 (i.e. himself). Great writing on this show! I can’t wait to re-watch this season from beginning to end to catch all the stuff I’ve missed and just bask in it’s awsomeness again!
got this off of io9 http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/science_news/4312764.html?series=6
definately the best epi of the season.
