Let’s talk about the Lost season finale!
// May 13th, 2009 // fun
Okay, so forget the recap of what happened…I just have too many questions/theories, and I know you all watched it so you don’t need me to rehash everything that happened.
Although many times on my non-recaps, I still recap what happened *grin*
***SPOILERS BELOW***
Raise your hand if you had Locke in the box. Okay…so no one. Same here.
Whatthefrak???
Loved the opening of this episode. The Lost writers always find a way to give us some kind of opening scene that completely blows your mind.
And probably the most important lines of the night happened in that first scene:
(Notice the continued black vs white theme)
Dude in Black: “They come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt, it always ends the same.”
Dude in White: “It only ends once, anything that happens before that is just progress.”
Dude in Black: “Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?”
Chills. And then the loophole comment. And then we get the guy in white’s name: Jacob.
WHAT always ends the same? And what only ends once? My head is spinning with that one.
Was that ship The Black Rock? Why is Jacob bringing it to the Island? WHY? WHY? WHY?
I saw someone tonight call the guy in black “Esau”, as in Jacob and Esau from the Bible. Interesting…and I’m just going to call him that for the rest of this blog.
At the end, Esau tells Jacob that it was very hard for him to get to this point…this loophole. It makes you go back and re-think every single thing that has happened.
Christian walking around…that’s Esau. I think that much is obvious because at the end we see him as Locke. Somehow, they can impersonate other people…but the key is, they have to be dead.
That’s the loophole. Or part of it anyways. I think the other side of the loophole is that Esau had to somehow take the form of the current “leader“, which was Locke.
By the way, that means Locke is really, really dead.
Jacob is bringing people back to the Island to fix something for a reason. He brings The Black Rock to the Island for a reason.
But Esau…he took advantage of it this time. He somehow set everything up so that Locke would become the next leader maybe? Then knew he had to get him to come back to the Island dead, so he tells Richard in the past to tell Locke that he has to come back, but he’ll need to be dead.
Yikes.
What else has Esau done in the meantime? Do you think he had something to do with the destruction of the statue? As Christian, what did he influence that got us to this point? Obviously he influenced Locke.
And Jacob…he appeared to all our Oceanic 815 survivors…at some point in their life. Hurley was the only one in which he actually tried to influence him going back to the Island. But why? What does it all mean?
I think a lot has to do with the reason he’s bringing them to the Island, which is a reason Esau wants him dead.
MEANWHILE…
Lots of stuff is happening with Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Juliet and everyone else back in the bloody 1970s. Sayid gets the bomb, gives it to Jack, he fights with Sawyer, but somehow everyone is convinced that the bomb must go off.
I wonder how many of the “Kate-Haters” out there were a bit miffed that the sole reason Jack wanted to do this was because he didn’t “get the girl” and Juliet wanted to help because “she didn’t get the guy.”
So after all the excitement, the bomb is dropped, doesn’t go off, Juliet gets sucked down with a chain and ends up setting it off to a BRIGHT explosion that ends with a WHITE “LOST” and a sickening number:
2010.
Ugh.
We really have zero idea what to expect next. Will things be reset? This season a WHITE FLASH has represented time travel, so did they travel through time? Was Miles right and they just CAUSED the incident themselves?
Was Jacob’s dying words “they are coming…” mean the people outside the statue, or Jack and friends?
And what of Illana and company? Why exactly are they there? We know Jacob appeared to her…and asked her to come to the Island. Did Jacob know all this was going to happen?
When she talked about someone else using the cabin…is that Christian played by Esau?
Anyone getting any religious vibes here? Will Jacob be ressurected?
I have too much going on inside my head, I need to go to bed…but some final thoughts:
- Loved seeing Rose and Bernard. Hilarious that they’ve just been living there for three years in perfect happiness.
- Richard was called Ricardus by Illana. Sounds like a Latin name or something…meaning he used to go by that older name.
Tell me what you guys thought? What are your theories???
PS. Was just lying in bed and two things came to me:
1. Esau was obviously controlling the smoke monster and became Ben’s daughter to make sure he listened to Locke.
2. The statue must get destroyed when that bomb went off. I’ll bet we’ll see it sinking into the ocean next season…or something to that effect.
Night!

Great post. I thought maybe the smoke monster was taking the form of dead people. Is it possible the smoke monster is that Esau guy? When Danielle & the French people came to the island and the one guy was sucked down into the temple by the monster, it took his voice to seduce the others down. Then it took the form of her friends and she shot them when she figured out they weren’t here. When Echo died the monster took the form of his brother. And when Ben talked with his “daughter” that was the monster/Esau taking her form to tell him to do what “Locke” said. These and Christian and Locke are all the ones I can remember but there may be more.
On a separate note, in addition to Hurley, Jacob also appeared to Sayid post-island. He did also influence him into going back eventually by allowing Nadia to die.
I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT JANUARY!!!!!!!!
Oh, I guess I totally skipped over the fact that Juliet is dead.
Am I the only one who really didn’t cry over it? Some people really liked her, but I was never a huge fan.
I thought the “loophole” was getting someone else to kill Jacob, ie. Ben.
I was totally riveted to the screen from scene one. And still shocked from everything. I’ve read in a few other places that people are equating fake Locke with the smoke monster. I’m not so sure that I agree, otherwise why would Esau look so surprised that he wouldn’t have to convince Ben to do as he asked?
So many things explained (how Hurley was brought to the island, what happened to Rose and Bernard, what was in the big case) and so many things left unanswered with so many more questions. 9 months is too long to wait.
I’m glad I found your Blog, I’ll be adding you to my list to follow
Joel, that seems a bit too easy to me. He could have asked anyone to do it at any time. Heck, he could have told Ben to do it awhile ago.
Tami, yeah, but maybe he was just talking circles around Ben to find out where his loyalties lie.
“Why haven’t you told Richard yet?”
It was kind of a question he knew the answer to already I think. Even since Locke (Esau) has been back, he’s been in total command and knew everything that was going on.
BTW Tami, added you to my feed as well! Thanks for stopping by!
Holy cow… and you all were saying Fringe was better than lost… shame on you!!! What a show!!!
a couple of things I noticed:
1) Sayid was shot and was wearing Horace uniform, that means when the gang first finds the VW bus and find the bones of the body, its actually Sayid and not horace in the uniform….
2) Who speaks Spanish? Illana asked Richard what lies in the shadow of the temple, the answer he gave was in spanish what did it translate to?
3) The black vs white was predominate and clearly seemed very religious with Jacob actually being Jacob form the Bible or an angel of sorts now. He had to touch everyone and those people then ended up on the island. He even apprently brought John back to life when he was tossed out of the window originally by touching him. clearly the dude in black is Satin or the polar opposite of Jacob (is there one?)
4) Does the black vs white then mean the island is heaven or some sort of gateway to it or to somewhere in between heaven and hell (why would black and white be on this island if it had any other significance)
5) I was sad when Juliet died (mainly cause it upset Sawyer)…
6) CRIMANY WHAT A ENDING… Good call Mike on the possible time travel instead of an explosion, because essentially it should be time travel as according to Jack they should all be in LAX, thus time travelled 30 years….
2010, come on…………………..
The whole show was awesome, but the last 10 minutes or so… OMG!
2010 seems SO long from now knowing Dave and I will have our 3rd baby by then. *sob*
Cap’n, love the idea of the dead Horace being Sayid!!!! WOW!
Also…I know what the translation of that line was, but I can’t find it right now. But it’s something like “he who will save us” or like that.
too… much… to… process…
Yeah the translation is Ille qui nos omnes es servabit.- He who will save all of us.
Also, the more I think about it, there have always been religious overtones, going way back to Adam and Eve skeletons… is that Jack and Kate, or is it Rose and Bernard…
also, Im wondering if the smoke monster is actually the dude in black ‘Esau’…. seems to make sense on some levels and morphs into people at times (was Bens daughter when confronting Ben,and wasn’t present when it was Bens daughter), I’m thinking it takes the shape of people who are dead like you said before, which makes sense it represents something from evil or hades… what do you think?
best show ever. the creators of this show are just genuis storytellers. i really am amazed by there attention to detail. they need more awards.
anyway, i am not bragging or anything but for some reason as soon as they were going to show the box to richard, i said “it’s locke!” i don’t know why it just clicked in my head. weird!
i definitely think it is esau taking the form of dead people and controlling or being smokey. i just wonder why he couldn’t kill jacob himself if he can kill other people like eko.
it seems like the other people from the plane are friends of jacob and were on some sort of mission to help him. i wonder if they are also ancient people who do not age as well. it makes me rethink the encounter they had with miles and why they didn’t want him to go back.
i really hope the flash at the end was time travel to reunite them with the other losties.
now that richard and the people outside the temple know that is not really locke, i wonder what they are going to do when he comes out?
the whole thing with jacob trying to get people to come to the island is weird since he can leave whenever he wants. so it is not a matter of him needing someone to come rescue him. i wonder how he travels off the island since he did not interact with dharma or the others very much. he wouldn’t have used the sub then right? did he use the wheel each time?
i am so confused and sad to wait until 2010. crap.
also, in the bible esau plans to kill his brother jacob but then forgives him and doesn’t do it. guess it doesn’t really follow that story too much.
What’s driving me crazy is the duality of Locke’s character this season. Yeah, we finally see that ‘Esau’ inhabits that body in someway but I can’t shake the fact that it’s still Locke in some way. Whether it’s moments like bringing up a memory of when he and Ben first met (referencing the hatch door) or even more confusing is when the Other’s brigade finally reach the big foot and Locke ask what’s so special about a giant foot while they’re looking for Jacob. ‘Esau’ would know the significance of that foot. Is it really 2 people in one John Locke?
Also, the body found in the dharma van long ago belonged to ‘Workman’, or Ben’s dad. Not Horace. It was left there when the Purge happened.
Great post Mike. Sooo many new questions! My head is still spinning! And here I was, all looking forward to finally meeting Jacob (which, don’t get me wrong, was very rewarding) but now I’m totally freaked out and intrigued by Esau. What’s the deal with those two!?!? Are they gods?!? Brothers?!?
Btw – the skeleton they find in the van isn’t Horus, it’s “Roger” with the title of “Workman”. It’s Ben’s dad. The day of the Purge, Ben gased Roger in the van and left him there to rot. (Season 3.)
Yeah, the Cap’n got a little excited about the Horace in the VW
Ditto Jina. I had to pause so many times to process and think about what had happened 10 minutes before. I am going to have to re-watch the finale to catch everything.
All I am saying is I cried when Juliet “died”. She was good for Sawyer.
-
Charles Widmore referenced a war that was coming to the Island, maybe it’s supposed to be Armageddon? This is where all forces will unite to fight evil, the question is who/what is evil in Lost?
We know that Esau is the leader of evil, but I don’t think we have any idea of who his army is (I don’t believe we’ve been introduced to them).
-
We still don’t know where Claire is. And the significance of Aaron, we know he has to play a role or why would the psychic want them on the Island so bad? It was for Claire to raise her child, well, if the plane landed in LAX, who would have been the adoptive parents? THAT will be an interesting thing to find out!
I wonder if they’ll show us what the psychic saw.
I just realized that the show appears to date the Ajira flight survivors on the island in 2007 (We know the dharma stuff is in 1977, and the show will say ‘30 years later’ when jumping to the Ajira-centric scenes). We see Jacob get stabbed in 2007. But Jacob visits Hurley after he gets out of jail in 2008. What does this mean?
Mid-season, I was ready to give up on Lost, sure that the creators didn’t have a clue where they were going and were just pulling stuff outta their behinds. Okay, okay, the last couple of episodes and the season finale convinced me otherwise!
But now I’m chapped that we hafta wait 8 months for the new season! Aiigh!
My wife has this theory that the Island is purgatory and the plane crash survivors are, in fact, not survivors at all but they just haven’t moved on to Heaven yet.
How can you ever think they don’t have a clue?
They know what they are doing, they have a PLAN!
There for awhile, it did seem like they were just pulling stuff out of thin air or just making things up as they were going along. But the finale certainly seemed to be purposefully-driven.
[...] off…can I PLEASE get some props for this??? My recap last season (read it here) had some shockingly accurate [...]
