Amazing Race recap, leg 5
// October 26th, 2009 // fun
I figured from the previews last week that the Mika/Canaan thing would be okay, but probably a little bit overblown by whoever makes those teasers at the end of every episode.
Nope, they weren’t kidding. In fact, it was much better than I could have ever expected and desired, giving us one of the best endings EVER on the Amazing Race.
Before that, let’s gloss over some of the other highlights on this leg, which seemed easy for Meghan and Cheyne, who left the pit stop first and finished first.
Although I sense something going on with that team, especially Meghan. Maybe I just didn’t notice it before, but she certainly seems more uptight and fun-less right now. I started counting the number of times Cheyne told her to “relax” and stopped around three.
Some hilarious lines tonight.
“Let’s do it for the hood!”
“Let’s do it for the suburbs Dan!”
So funny. Also:
“We stay here long enough, Lance and Keri are gonna show up!”
Followed up by:
“Do it for the hood? The hood is mad at me right now!”
Seriously, the Globetrotters are so very lucky to be in the race still after letting three teams pass them while Big Easy couldn’t figure out 8:35pm.
Oh, on a side note, while the poker girls thought Dan and Sam had a “Baywatch” moment, I really would have to say it was Ericka.
Now, let’s get to the GOOOOOOD STUFF.
Mika. First she’s afraid of water, heights and then we find out this leg she’s “never run before”??? She’s never even run? What they heck does that mean? Like really never run? I just keep saying it over and over in my head because it’s stunning.
But not that stunning when the end of the leg arrived and she just needed to go down a 6-story slide and not be eliminated for the race, but couldn’t do it. Even seeing the Globetrotters behind her and given two-minutes wasn’t enough motivation.
Now, many will want to bash Big Easy for being a jerk to Mika, telling her she couldn’t do it, she should come back, what have you. And yes, maybe it was…but Canaan was close to throwing his GIRLFRIEND down a SLIDE for a million dollars, so it’s hard to blame either of them for what they were doing.
I was so tense during the whole thing, because she just wouldn’t go down, while the producers kept making us believe the Globetrotters were catching up. Usually this is all false excitement, but not tonight.
They caught up, Mika suffered the most epic FAIL on Amazing Race ever, the Globetrotters passed them, and Mika and Canaan were eliminated. And even when they arrived at the mat, I’m surprised Phil didn’t say “Mika and Canaan…you’re the last team to arrive…AND…you still need to do the slide before I can check you in.”
I’ve never seen a finish quite like that. Amazing excitement all-around. I feel bad for Canaan though…I have to say, if I was just dating some girl and that happened…it would certainly be hard to forget about it. He was nice in the interview afterwards…but what about when they get home?
“I just wish I was in Nashville right now.”
Now you are Mika.

good recap mike. i wish he did push her down the slide. that was so crazy. why would you go on this show if you can’t even stomach a water slide? and the running comment was nuts! never run? so weird.
i think with meghan, the show is really editing her. maybe they need to find a way for that couple to be more interesting since they are winning so much. i don’t know, it just seems forced to me. i think all the teams get stressed and grumpy with one another. so unless she goes really postal or something, i just figure it’s the stress and nerves of doing this race.
If Canaan were dating me, he’d still be in the race. I’d go down that slide in a heartbeat!! No more hotness in this race.
How did that girl even get on the show!?! She was crying outside the sky scraper, before she knew what she even had to do! How would you have liked to be that life guard who had to watch them screaming at each other with her floaties on?
PS Mike – Erika’s are real and I thought she was going to knock herself out in her baywatch moment.
Go teams! And by teams I mean my teams.
And yeah, if I were Canaan I would be seriously PO’d at that whole slide thing. I get being scared, but part of the race is trying to push yourself and go for it. Epic FAIL indeed!
Tracy, glad someone else noticed Ericka’s Baywatch moment
That was a little bit crazy
