Waaaaay back in 2007 Jina and I tried to get people we knew to start watching Damages. It was this out-of-nowhere summer show on the FX Network that captured our minds and kept us guessing right up until the end. It had amazing acting, great writing and a solid mystery.

Well, the show finally returned this past Wednesday night…and it didn’t disappoint. I wasn’t sure after the first 30 minutes or so if they could equal the level of quality from season one, but by the end of the episode, I was hooked.

You may be wondering, or asking yourself, do I need to see season one first? The answer (I think) is NO. Yes, the first season had a ton of character development that you may be missing out on, but this first episode does a nice recap at the beginning and uses enough quick flashbacks during the episode to make sure you know what is going on.

Why should you watch it? It’s compelling, exciting and they do a great job of compacting a great mystery into 13 episodes and giving you good material every week. There just isn’t a lot of “filler”.

The other reason is the cast. It’s unbelievable…especially this season. Rose Bryne, Glenn Close, Ted Danson, William Hurt, Tate Donovan, Timothy Olyphant, Mario Van Peebles, Marcia Gay Harden and more.

You also may ask how I could list Ted Danson as a good cast member…the guy was unbelievable in season one. After Cheers, I never much cared for the guy…and when I heard he was in Damages, I wasn’t sure about it. But the guy played Arthur Frobisher perfectly.

Anyways…jump into this series and tell me what you think. You can catch the season premiere repeat on FX sometime…I know it’s on this Tuesday for sure. Then episode two is Wednesday night.

So Jina didn’t watch it really, but I co-hearsed her into it. I started it Tuesday night, watched the first 30 seconds and had to stop. She wasn’t with me (instead sitting looking at iTunes or something), and I knew if she missed out on this, disappointment would reign all summer long.

The show is called Damages and now we’re both HUGE fans.

The reviews I’ve seen since it premiered Tuesday had been stellar, so it got me excited. We sat down with dinner tonight and watched the first episode and it was fantastic.

Starring Glenn Close, Tate Donovan, Rose Byrne and Ted Danson, it seems like an unlikely cast, but the writing and acting was superb. Danson doesn’t even seem like any Ted Danson I’ve ever seen before. Even George Costanza would be correct now when he said “It’s not as much as Ted Danson makes!” He was great. Close is also good and tough to figure out.

The show begins with Ellen (Byrne) coming out of an elevator all bloody and half-naked. And it goes from there. It’s a legal-type show as it’s about lawyers and a huge case, but it’s not anything like Law and Order, or Ally McBeal or any of those.

It’s a thriller, a mystery and a drama. It’s got that hook where you will be trying to figure out a season-long mystery. You are watching the show from 6-months in the past, while getting clues about the mystery in “flash-forwards”.

It’s on FX, the same station with great shows like The Shield and Rescue Me. Check it out, I’m sure it will replay sometime this week before next Tuesday.
