If you’ve used Google Mail, or Gmail, long enough, you’ve probably kept an eye on the little status line at the bottom:

You are currently using 149 MB (3%) of your 4482 MB

That’s directly out of my Gmail account as of this morning. Some people like to keep their email clean, and delete everything. I tend to let my mail pile up and up and up and up…

The thing is, that amount available to you has just increased and you may not have noticed. It happened a few weeks ago when it jumped to 2.9 gigabytes and then again on the 23rd of October, where it increased another 1.5 gigs to 4.5 gb total.

And it doesn’t stop there. Google keeps adding more and more space, despite having a plan where you can pay to have additional storage.

By January 4th of 2008, which is only a few months away, you’ll have about 6 gigabytes available to you. By 2038, if email is still around, you’ll have 42 gigs. Wow.

So there you have it. You really don’t need to delete mail at all, because you’ll likely never run out of space.

Why keep your email? Well, Google has such a great ability to search through old email, that it’s worth it to just hang onto them. I tend to use the search feature a lot, to find things I lost, like perhaps a license key, or a username and password I forgot.

If you aren’t using Gmail, you might want to think about it. Being stuck using Outlook or some other Operating System-based program will hold you back from the freedom to check your email anywhere you are.

I wrote a blog about all of this, and you should check it out if you want to know more.

I saw this video the other day and was pretty shocked at what it showed me. When you are done with it, you sort of feel like you should have known all along what the heck is going on with “money” in the world, but in all honesty, I doubt many of us truly realize it.

The bottom line is this: Money is created out of debt. When you go take out a loan on your house from a bank, that bank basically gives you money it creates FROM the loan you just asked for.

It’s not like they have $200,000 in the bank, and when you ask to borrow it, they give it out and suddenly have $0. Nope. They basically create money out of thin air.

All our money today is created from debt. Without debt, there would be no money. The really sad thing about it is we have to pay back interest. Well, interest is above and beyond the debt that was created before, so there is no way all debt could ever be paid off.

I know, it sounds weird and strange, but the more I read and hear reactions to this video, it absolutely is true. The funny thing is, the fact that we have a nation debt is because it helps keep the economy every growing upwards, because without debt, there would be no money.

Now, I don’t know about their solution to the problem, but it is interesting. The video is 45 minutes long, so it’s not an easy thing to watch. But I promise you, it’s eye-opening and shocking. Maybe take a lunch break at your desk and check it out.

If you don’t use Gmail, you can read my blog about why I switched and what it can do for you.

Googling Google has reported that the user interface for Gmail may be undergoing an overhaul. It’s essentially remained the same since its inception in 2004, so a redesign or enhancement is likely to be right around the corner.

Hopefully it wont change much or at least the redesign will end up being cooler. I’ve gotten used to how it is, but perhaps there are a few improvements that could be added. For example, I’d like an easier way to tell Google to check my accounts for email. Right now, you have to go into Settings > Accounts and then “Check Mail”.

In fact, I’ve even deleted a bunch over the last month, but new ones always seem to make their way in. But I digress.

I saw it again today while I was browsing through Google’s seemingly infinite supply of tools and applications. I saw Alerts and remembered it, so I gave it a shot.

After having used it for only about six hours, I really feel it’s an invaluable tool, especially for us bloggers. I know a few of you who blog and some that may be getting into it down the road. So this is definitely something you might plan on using.

Basically, a Google Alert allows you to set up keyword searches that automatically run for you in that mysterious Google universe. You can choose what to search, like comprehensive, news, blogs or the web. I chose blogs since that’s who you interact with mostly online when you run a blog yourself. You can also choose the frequency in which you want to retrieve these alerts, and they come in your inbox.

I set up keywords for the following: suns, directv, battlestar galactica, blogging and arizona cardinals, hoping to see what I would get just throwing random, interesting words out there. I also blog on my sports site, so finding random Suns or Cardinals news helps with finding topics to write about.

In just under six hours, I got some pretty decent results. I found a blog about a Steve Nash interview that I hadn’t seen yet. I also discovered a movie called “Thousand Splendid Suns” coming out in 2009. So it’s not perfect, but I AM the one who gave them the word “suns”.

Even if you aren’t blogging, it’s kind of a cool way to find news on things. If you use a RSS Reader, you only get the new from the blogs you are subscribed to, not the entire blogging universe.

Give it a try if you want. The best way I’ve found to sign up for Google stuff, is off their “My Account” page, which isn’t the easiest place to get to. So bookmark that and you can get to any of your Google tools you want.

Since I’ve done so much writing on Web 2.0 and how you can move your internet life OFF your computer and onto the web, I want to keep passing on new things that should help further this evolution.

Google Docs has been around for awhile already. I wrote about how you can use it for writing documents and doing spreadsheets. The cool thing is that they are kept on the web, so you can work on them from anywhere, and also share them with anyone and the latest version is always the one you see. No need to email documents to people anymore…just send them the link to the published version on Google Docs.

Anyways, this week Google finally released Google Presentation, which is their answer to Microsoft PowerPoint. It now gives you even MORE reason to move all your document creation and development online. Most of their Google Doc apps allow you to save them in Microsoft format if you wish, so it’s easy to share will people in your Microsoft-based office.

And if you are interested in how it works compared to PowerPoint, Mashable has already written up a comparison blog about it. Check it out.

So there you go…exciting news if you get into this stuff.
